Chapter Twenty-Three

LINDA

In my graphics design class, my mind wonders to last weekend when I woke up warm and safe in Colton’s arms. I know I had a bad dream about Ramon. It was like he was real but then everything faded to black. He was gone, and I was safe. I felt wanted and warm. When I woke up, a sleepy grin greeted me.

“I will need your projects by the end of next week, no exceptions.”

Shit. I haven’t even started. The laptop I bought is so slow, and it lags. I have to stop eating shit and get to work or I will fail the class.

Everyone files out of the class and the professor gives me a smile, but it fades when he spots Leo at the door.

“Mr. Santos.” He acknowledges Leo nervously. “Is there something I can help you with?”

He nudges his chin at me. “I’m waiting for her.” Leo gives him a grin. “Go easy on her. She’s a like family.”

“Oh. I wasn’t aware.” The professor eyes me warily. “She didn’t mention anything.”

“She doesn’t want special treatment, but Galiano is a little temperamental when it comes to Linda.”

I have never seen the man look so nervous. I bet he must be eating his words about my clothes the first day.

“I-I’m sorry. I hope I haven’t—”

Giving the professor a smile, I say, “Don’t listen to Leo. He’s pulling your chain. I’ll have the project done. No special treatment. Got it?”

His brow is wet with sweat. “Got it. I wouldn’t dream of it.”

Once we are out in the hallway, I try to keep up with Leo’s long strides. I asked him if I could go to his club with him tonight. He said he would see me after my class, and we would talk about it.

“So, I can go?”

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I’m sure. I want to try the special room.”

He stops walking and turns to look at me. “Do you think you are ready for something like that?”

I nod. “No emotion and this”—I wag my finger between us—“stays between you and me.”

“Don’t forget the guy.”

“Right, the guy.”

Anticipation is coursing through my veins. Tonight, is the night, I can let myself go and give in to the unknown.
